The Role of Interstate Compacts in Modernizing the Healthcare Workforce

      The requirement for certain healthcare professionals to hold an occupational license issued by the state functions as a safeguard to maintain public safety in healthcare. Occupational licensure ensures that those purporting to be qualified to provide care within their specialty have achieved the level of education and training necessary to do so. However, the requirements necessary to maintain and hold an occupational license, even when implemented as a safeguard for patient safety, can prevent mobility and affect market participation and competition (

      ). Chief among these consequences is the burden of obtaining and maintaining licensure in multiple states to meet the demands of the modern healthcare delivery system.
